Library News for April 2015

Library Week and Photo Contest

It is time for Library Week from 12 to 16 April! The theme for 2015 is "Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library". The message is that no matter who you are, or where you come from, you can achieve great things, and the library is one of your best tools in your journey.

Check your Library for more information on activities.

Photo Contest

The computers in the Library and the Independent Learning Center (ILC) use student photographs as screensavers. This year we would like to add new photographs to these screensavers, and what better way than having the students contribute and potentially win a prize!

As part of Library Week, and with a theme that mirrors Library Week, namely "Unlimited Possibilities in the UAE", students are invited to submit photographs that tie into the theme, and are created within the UAE.
  • Entries are limited to ADW & KWC students only
  • Photos can be taken with any device
  • Must be original and not heavily manipulated (e.g. Photoshop)
  • Must fulfill the theme in an understandable manner
  • Contest closes at the end of May 2015
Contact Stephen Visagie at ADMC for more information and submissions, or ask any library staff member to assist. Or please see any of the Librarians for further information.

Library News for December 2014

The Library staff enjoyed the opportunity to get involved in the American Library Association presentations and workshops at the Sharjah Book Fair this year. We have lots of great ideas that we would like to try in your libraries so look out for some interesting spaces in the new year.

Study Spaces

In KCWC Library priority is given to students to use the small study rooms for quiet study. You can book these rooms for one hour at a time through the service desk.

The Learning Continues

Several research faculty meetings have been organized in Abu Dhabi campuses during early December. Please RSVP to Dr. Janet Martin if you are not on the current mailing list, but would like to attend:
ADMC Sunday 7 December – 2-3:00pm in the library conference room
ADWC Tuesday 9 December – 1-2:00pm in library training room D117
KWC Wednesday 10 December – 3.30-4.30pm in library training room L102

All faculty and staff interested in applied research are very welcome to join in this informal group.

ADWC and KCWC Library wishes you a very happy National Day celebration!

Test your iMac Work at Khalifa Library

iPads have been added to iMacs in the KWC Library, so that students can demo their work realistically

Prospects for the American Age

Signed copies of Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi’s book "Prospects for the American Age" have been donated to both Khalifa and City Campus Libraries.

Faculty Research Group

Abu Dhabi libraries have initiated a Faculty Research Group. This is an informal gathering of faculty interested in researching (in some capacity) who will meet a couple of times a semester in each Abu Dhabi campus. The first meeting at ADWC was held on 15 October, and meetings in KWC and ADMC will be held Sunday 2 and Monday 3 November respectively. Anyone with an interest in sharing or learning more about research is welcome to attend. For further information, please contact Dr. Janet Martin in ADWC library on janet.martin@hct.ac.ae.

In short...

  • Always check the library screens for updates to library hours, as well as other helpful information.
  • Please only bring covered drinks (those with lids) into the library, as a spill can damage our equipment, or leave a nasty stain on our carpet!
  • At times the libraries can be quite busy with events supporting student learning. If you need a quieter area to study, ask the Service Desk about finding/booking a quiet area to study.
  • Remember to bring your latest HCT ID card if you want to print in the Library!

Library News for October 2014

Our library team have enjoyed meeting our new Foundations students and we are so pleased to see how many of you are borrowing our Graded Readers for the M-Reader competition. We have also been spending time with program levels and showing students how to get the best results from their research, as well as sharing some referencing tips.

At Khalifa campus we now have Starbucks in the library, so please enjoy a coffee while using our facilities. Please also remember that our students enjoy the library as a study space so we ask our Starbucks patrons to respect your fellow students’ study areas.

Finally the library team wishes you Eid Mubarak and if you need some good reads for the break, stop by the library for a recommendation of a print book or eBook.
