“Let your library book find you, using Apple iBeacons”

No, it is not an error. iBeacons are small devices that emit low-energy blue-tooth signals broadcasting a unique ID. When an iPhone or iPad user is within close proximity of the iBeacon, a notification is automatically sent to the device and a special app is opened up displaying information about a library resource. Macy’s Departmental Store, Starbucks and Apple Stores in the US are using it to notify users of in-store discounts and product information as users enter the stores.

Barry Naidoo a project manager from HCT Edtech explains “ A trial is underway in the library at ADWC- City Campus where three iBeacons have been installed. One at the entrance, one at the “New Arrivals” book section and the other at the “Graded Readers” section. As library users come within range of these iBeacons, appropriate information will be pushed to them automatically via an app. We hope to finish up a prototype app soon.”

The Abu Dhabi ILC Library staff are extremely grateful that Barry was able to have this project up and running for Library Week, so don’t forget to bring your iPads and iPhones with you when you visit ADW City Campus library during Library Week. Get ready to have information about our library delivered to you in a very new and special way.
